All routes of illegal migration leading to Europe are active, and until the European Union’s policy changes and until the very possibility of entering the EU is closed once and for all, a great many people will see this as a letter of invitation, the Chief Security Advisor to the Prime Minister pointed out on the Wednesday morning programme of the public service television news channel M1.

György Bakondi highlighted that in the EU “the migration crisis has reached a political level”; according to public opinion surveys, there is an increased demand for stopping the process of illegal migration and restoring security. This is a “pressing need” all the more because elections will be held shortly in a number of Member States.

He said one of the consequences of the efforts of Montenegro, Croatia and Slovenia is that once again people in increasingly large numbers are attempting to cross via the Hungarian-Serbian and Hungarian-Romanian borders. He mentioned that, according to estimates, the number of illegal immigrants on the Balkan Peninsula, on their way to the EU, currently stands at around 80,000.

On Kossuth Radio’s programme 180 minutes Mr Bakondi said the fact that German Chancellor Angela Merkel promised to provide support for some Balkans states for the management of the situation indicates that also leaders in Berlin have finally recognised that which the Hungarian government has been saying for years; namely that the stability of the peninsula is very precious from the viewpoint of Europe’s security.
