“One hundred and eight illegal border crossers were apprehended within the territory of Hungary between Friday and Sunday”, the National Police Headquarters informed Hungarian news agency MTI on Monday.

According to statistics published on the Police website, 3, 70 and 43 people were apprehended on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, respectively, and were accompanied back across the temporary security fence along the Serbian-Hungarian border. 31 illegal border crossers were apprehended further inland and along other stretches of the country’s border over the weekend.

According to the new regulations that came into force on 5 July, people who are apprehended within a distance of 8 kilometres of the Serbian and Croatian border with Hungary will be accompanied back to the gate at the border fence and will be directed to the nearest transit zone. Those who are proven to have crossed or damaged the border security fence, or who are suspected of people smuggling, are being prosecuted, while along the Romanian and Ukrainian borders they are subject to immigration proceedings.

A total of 234 illegal border crossers were apprehended during the past week in the vicinity of the Serbian-Hungarian border and were accompanied back to Serbia by police, while during the previous week of 20-26 September, this number was 309. 47 illegal border crossers were apprehended further inland and along other stretches of the country’s border, the police summary states.
