György Bakondi, Chief Security Advisor to the Prime Minister, has told Hungarian television channel M1 that border protection has recently become increasingly important in the European Union and in international politics.

Mr. Bakondi pointed out that the migration situation is not expected to ease in the near future. Due to the uncertainty in Turkey, large numbers of people might set off for Europe, including along the Balkan route. There has been a massive border violation on the Spanish-Moroccan border, he added, with hundreds of people breaking through – despite the existence of a six-metre-high barrier.

The Chief Security Advisor also said that a decision might be made soon on the European Commission proposal on the migrant distribution system: the quota system.

Mr. Bakondi explained that there are glaring discrepancies between certain countries’ views on mass migration. He said that many believe that immigration “is a good thing, which should be promoted”; they argue that it is the basis of future multicultural societies and a factor in economic growth. In contrast to this, Hungary and a number of other countries consider uncontrolled illegal migration to be dangerous: it is a threat to public security, public health, the economy and the social welfare system. Mr. Bakondi added that a turning-point can be expected in this debate at the European Council meeting on Thursday and Friday.
