“Brussels has admitted its pro-immigration plans”, the Chief Security Advisor to the Prime Minister said in an interview for Hungarian daily Magyar Hírlap published on Friday.

György Bakondi stated: “The European Commission may try to deny it, but the intentions of the Brussels bureaucracy are absolutely obvious, and they want to realise these plans following the European Parliament (EP) elections”.

With relation to the statement adopted at the migration summit of the European Union and the Arab League signed by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, he said there is absolutely no contradiction between the contents of the closing statement and the Government’s politics. “Hungary does not support illegal immigration. However, the drawing up of the document was a long process, and thanks to the veto exercised by Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó, the stipulations of the UN Global Compact for Migration were not included in the statement”, Mr. Bakondi explained.

“This is important, because although it was previously claimed that the UN Global Compact for Migration will not be mandatory, it has become absolutely clear that the contents of the Compact could become part of international law”, he highlighted.

He pointed out that the Government’s information campaign concerning Brussels’ plans is still justified following the statement on migration policy issued by the European Commission (EC), since in essence the EC has admitted to its pro-immigration plans. He mentioned the European Parliament’s proposal regarding migrant visas, which in his opinion is truly about the fact that if anyone goes into an embassy of any EU member state in Africa and indicates that they want to travel to Europe for humanitarian reasons, then they will receive a visa, and from then on they cannot be stopped at any border and it will be impossible to deport them at a later date. He reminded the press that the EC said with relation to the migrant cards issued only to refugees in Greece, that it has transferred significant amounts of money to these anonymous debit cards. “Regardless of the claims that they are monitoring the fate of these cards, this isn’t working in practice, since the migrants are moving on in the meantime. The EC is also going against its own rules, since it is against regulations to issue anonymous banking cards in Europe”, he said in assessment.

“The upcoming EP elections are more important than ever before. For the moment the Government is providing information, because the Hungarian people have the right to know what is at stake at an election, and this will be followed by the Fidesz-KDNP campaign”. he stressed. “The Democratic Coalition has already stated its support for the need for a United States of Europe, but in contrast the governing parties will be campaigning so that the pro-immigration forces acquire a majority, and to reinforce an alliance of nation states that are equal partners”, he added.

With relation to the EC’s proposal for the next multiannual financial framework, according to which no member states would be punished for their migration policies, the Chief Advisor said the budget would earmark major funding for non-governmental organisations that protect European values. “The task of these organisations would be to categorise states based on their democratic values, and Brussels would then reduce the level of available funding accordingly. A mechanism of this kind does not fit into the democratic practices of European nation states, and for this reason the Government regards it as unacceptable”, he said.

With relation to the EU’s border and coastguard agency Frontex, he recalled the EC proposal according to which a ten thousand strong unit should be established, which would have the power to decide on border security interventions in case of emergency. “This is unacceptable to the Hungarian Government, because a step of this nature would mean a major reduction of national sovereignty”, he underlined.

With relation to current movements along the various migration routes, Mr. Bakondi said that around seventy thousand illegal immigrants have accumulated along the Balkan route, and new migrants are arriving continuously. “The security situation in Bosnia-Hercegovina has reached critical levels, and the number of migrants is also continuously increasing. In addition, movement from Libya to Italy and from Morocco to Spain is also significant, and most of the migrants arriving from there want to travel on to other countries such as Germany, for instance”, the Chief Advisor explained.

“Some 1500 people have attempted to cross the border onto Hungary’s territory so far in 2019, 204 of whom were prevented from crossing the fence by police and military personnel, while the remaining 1282 were accompanied back to the border”, Mr. Bakondi told the press.
