udapest has won the right to host the 2023 World Athletics Championships, the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) announced in Monaco on Tuesday.
event.
According to an on-site report for Hungarian M1 television, the Hungarians’ presentation, in which Minister of State for Budapest and its agglomeration Balázs Fürjes from the Prime Minister’s Office, President of the Hungarian Athletics Federation Miklós Gyulai, and head of the application committee Márton Gyulai also took part, may have begun half an hour late, but since only the Budapest venue reached this stage of the application, the decision process did not take long.
“It is a piece of positive feedback and a major acknowledgement that we will be able to host the World Championships in five years’ time. We are certain that the successful bid is not only an acknowledgement of the work performed in recent months, but also of the past decades of Hungarian athletics”, Gyula Márton said on Hungarian M1 television following the decision. “In recent years, Hungary has been an excellent host for several world sports competitions, and this probably also helped our successful application”, he added.
The IAAF introduced a new kind of application system beginning from this year: the organisation assessed in advance under what conditions the applicants would be able to host one of the world’s largest sports events, based on which the organisation’s Council recommended that Budapest be the host at its session in Buenos Aires in July. At the time, IAAF President Sebastian Coe said Budapest was the preferred location for the 2023 World Athletics Championships.
The 2023 World Championships will be held exactly 25 years after Budapest hosted a highly successful European Championships.
Next year’s World Championships will be held in Doha, after which Eugene, USA will host the event in 2021.
