Background:
The Treaty of Trianon officially dissolved the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, as a result of which Hungary’s area (without Croatia) was reduced from 283 thousand to 93 thousand square kilometres, its number of inhabitants from 18.2 million to 7.6 million. Approximately 3.2 million Hungarians – accounting for one third of all Hungarians – found themselves living outside the new borders of Hungary.
The Hungarian National Assembly ratified the Treaty on 15 November 1920, and officially announced it with Act XXXIII on 26 July 1921.
On 31 May 2010 Parliament declared 4 June the Day of National Unity marking the day of signing the Treaty of Trianon.
