György Bakondi, Chief Security Advisor to the Prime Minister told Hungarian television channel M1 on Wednesday morning that the mandatory distribution of migrants is not the solution, and neither is it supported by EU Member States.
In accordance with the Hungarian proposals tabled two years ago, state borders must be strictly guarded, and the latest events in Italy show that this can also be achieved at sea. At the same time, hotspots must be set up outside the EU where it is possible to determine which migrants are genuine asylum-seekers and which ones should be let in, he said.
The number of those arriving in Italy via the sea route is on the decrease after the Libyan coast guards which receive technical assistance from Italian vessels were successfully reinforced. The Italian Parliament has passed a code of conduct for non-governmental organisations active on the sea routes, and an agreement has also been reached with Libyan tribes to stop the uncontrolled influx of migrants at the southern borders of the country, Mr. Bakondi explained.
In consequence, however, migration in the direction of Spain is intensifying, he added.
Partial results have been achieved on the Balkan route: while the mass influx of migrants stopped, there is "leakage”, he said.
Mr. Bakondi highlighted on the programme 180 minutes of Kossuth Rádió in the context of non-governmental organisations: the Hungarian Government greatly appreciates the work of charitable and humanitarian organisations, but the laws must also be observed by organisations "with an unclear financial background receiving funding from abroad” which "pursue political goals” and "resist governments”.
