At the European Commission’s midday press briefing, Spokesperson for Climate Action and Energy Anna-Kaisa Itkonen commented on the misleading statements made by the Financial Times about the expansion of the Paks II nuclear power plant.

She explained that the European Commission is particularly looking into the security of nuclear fuel supply. She added that since the documents had only just been declassified by the consent of the Hungarian authorities, the Commission’s decision regarding this issue would be published as extensively as possible at a later stage.

The Spokesperson stressed that the Commission is not blocking the construction at Paks: the Commission had only dealt with the fuel supply agreements. Chief Spokesperson Margaritis Schinas also underlined that the issue under discussion does not concern the whole project.
