Every day some 100 to 150 migrants attempt to cross the border using a variety of methods, the Chief Security Advisor to the Prime Minister said on Wednesday morning on the public service television news channel M1.

György Bakondi mentioned among these methods that migrants try to cut through the border fence or climb over it using a ladder, while others dig under the fence building tunnels or try to somehow bypass it.

So far this year, the Hungarian authorities have foiled around 22,000 illegal border crossing attempts, and charges have been pressed against almost 300 persons due to people smuggling, he added.

In August this year, the number of foiled entry attempts exceeded the total annual numbers of the last three years, Mr Bakondi highlighted.

“It is therefore fair to say that migrants attempting to cross the border are keeping the state borders under continuous pressure,” he stressed, adding that their work is not being made any easier by the fact that ongoing political attacks are being levelled at the government due to its border measures.
