As the fire started in multiple locations, it is to be presumed that the fire incident in the Moria migrant centre on the Island of Lesbos in Greece was caused by arson, the Chief Security Advisor to the Prime Minister said on the Friday evening programme of the public service television news channel M1.

György Bakondi highlighted that conditions in the migrant centre were becoming almost untenable. Additionally, the coronavirus epidemic, too, emerged among migrants.

He said a few hundred migrants disappeared from the camp destroyed by fire. Available information confirms that there were more than forty confirmed infected migrants among them.

The chief advisor also responded to the fact that Horst Seehofer, Interior Minister of Germany currently holding the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union, said in Berlin that the European Commission will present its proposal for the “joint resolution” of issues concerning asylum affairs on 30 September.

Mr Bakondi stressed that we need a new migration policy which is able to effectively guarantee the security of the European people.

He also observed that both Germany currently holding the rotating presidency and the European Commission must realise that distribution on the basis of mandatory quotas does not have a large majority support base. A great many countries disagree with it, he added, highlighting that it will be necessary to find a compromise solution.
