On Kossuth Radio’s “Sunday News” programme, the Chief Security Advisor to the Prime Minister said that “Illegal immigration, and Hungary’s handling of it, will most probably also be on the agenda at Monday’s hearing of the European Parliament’s Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs.

György Bakondi pointed out that the hearing on the status of fundamental human rights in Hungary had been initiated by the EP’S socialist group. The Hungarian government will be represented by Minister of Justice László Trócsányi, and representatives of several non-governmental organisations will also be present at the hearing. According to Mr. Bakondi, representatives from Amnesty International, the Hungarian Civil Liberties Union (TASZ) and the Helsinki Commission will also have the opportunity to put forward their opinions. Mr. Bakondi expressed the hope that the Justice Minister will be able to counter the objections of non-governmental organisations in a suitable manner.

The Chief Security Advisor mentioned doublespeak on border protection in the European Union. As he explained, the decision to introduce systematic border controls, which will cause major delays at Schengen border crossing points, has been adopted at a political level; at the same time, however, when it comes to acting against illegal migration “we are not experiencing a similar level of strictness on guarding the external borders”.

Mr. Bakondi also said that the vast majority of the population supports the Hungarian administration’s measures on migration, and it is the Government’s firm intent to continue doing everything possible to protect Hungarian citizens.
