On Wednesday evening, György Bakondi, Chief Security Advisor to the Prime Minister, told Hungarian public television channel M1 that migrants are making more intensive efforts to get into Romania from Serbia, from where they can go on to Hungary.

When asked about 240 illegal border crossers apprehended by Romanian authorities, Mr. Bakondi said that this shows that migrants who have been attempting to cross the Hungarian border from Serbia with the help of people smugglers in groups of various sizes are now beginning to make more intensive efforts to get into Romanian territory – and from there to get into Hungary on trains, vans or on foot across the green border.

Mr. Bakondi said that it remains a question whether the currently unsteady Serbian-Romanian border protection cooperation will worsen; if, for instance, the Serbs do not take back migrants arriving from Serbia who have been apprehended by the Romanians, this could cause problems in Romania.

He added that Romanian border protection authorities apprehend those attempting to cross the country’s border with Serbia. Romanian border protection is also active near the Hungarian border, where they are apprehending a number of migrants, he said.

Mr. Bakondi further explained that there is continuous exchange of information with the Romanian border protection bodies, who are also taking back migrants apprehended by Hungarian authorities.
