On Tuesday György Bakondi, Chief Security Advisor to the Prime Minister, told public television channel M1 that the migration pressure from Turkey is increasing week by week, as migrants arriving on the Balkan route are targeting the Hungarian border.
Mr. Bakondi explained that since the coup attempt in Turkey, the number of migrants arriving on the Greek islands has been doubling every week. He added that migrants are also arriving at the Hungarian border after having crossed the Bulgarian border and Serbia.
As a result, more than one hundred people are attempting to cross Hungary’s border illegally every day, and authorities are already preventing the same number of attempts at the border fence, he said.
Talking about an opinion poll conducted in twenty European countries which has shown that more than half of citizens support the closure of borders, Mr. Bakondi said that the shift in political sentiment is obvious.
While nation states have started protecting themselves from migration, Brussels’ position remains unchanged: it is continuing its pro-migration policy.
In an interview with public broadcaster Kossuth Rádió, Mr. Bakondi said that the European Commission’s standpoint is gradually becoming an isolated one.
The citizens of Hungary will be the first ones in Europe to state their opinions on whether or not they want the settlement of migrants in their country. It is important that people cast their votes, Mr. Bakondi stressed.
