“Migration movement along the Balkan migration route will increase because of the warm weather”, Chief Security Advisor to the Prime Minister György Bakondi said on Hungarian M1 television’s Wednesday morning current affairs program.
Mr. Bakondi said that according to experience, in the winter period migrants like to hide in vehicles and on trains, and because of the cold weather relatively few migrants attempt to cross the green border.
Over forty attempts have been made to illegally cross the Serbian border over the past 24 hours, and 1700 people have made attempts so far this year, he added, despite the fact that this border crossing point is not part of the main migration route, since most people arriving from the direction of Serbia and Montenegro want to get to Bosnia, and their goal from there is Croatia and Slovenia.
If the Croatian border forces introduce stricter security, or the efficiency of Slovenian border fence security improves, then some of the migrants who are sent back will again find themselves in Serbia, and from there will attempt to illegally cross the Hungarian-Serbian or Serbian-Romanian border, he pointed out.
Although Hungary is not part of the main migration route, illegal migration pressure can still reach up to 50 people-a-day along the border, he stated.
Speaking on Kossuth Radio’s “Good Morning, Hungary!” show, Mr. Bakondi said the European Commission is unwilling to provide financial assistance to countries that have performed their duties, and are continuing to perform them, with relation to protecting the Schengen borders, and accordingly this system must be rethought following the European parliament elections.
