“The masses of people arriving from Libya and other African countries represent an increasing problem not just for the security of Italy, but with regard to that of the whole European Union, and accordingly requires a European solution”, Chief Security Advisor to the Prime Minister György Bakondi said on Hungarian M1 television’s Tuesday evening current affairs programme.
The most illegal immigrants are currently arriving in Europe from Libya, in view of which it would be important to conclude an agreement with the country on keeping people who are planning to set off for the continent there.
“However, the EU’S negotiating partner, the Government of national Accord, only controls part of the country, and Parliament has failed to authorise a previous agreement, and accordingly there are doubts as to whether an agreement with the country can be achieved”, Mr. Bakondi said.
Speaking on Kossuth Radio’s “180 Minutes” programme, the Chief Security Advisor said that Hungary is prepared for the situation that would arise if the EU-Turkey agreement fails completely.
The mechanical border protection system and its manpower support have been reinforced, in addition to which the second fence, which will be capable of withstanding much greater pressure together with the assistance of border security personnel and the consistent enforcement of laws and regulations, is also being constructed “at a rapid tempo”, he declared.
