Most migrants are attempting to enter the country at the Hungarian-Serbian border section, but migrant activity can also observed on the Hungarian-Romanian and Hungarian-Croatian border sections, the Chief Security Advisor to the Prime Minister said on the public service television news channel M1 on Wednesday morning.

György Bakondi said a relatively large number of migrants are arriving via the Balkans route, originating from Greece. He added that in Greece criminal procedures had already been instituted against non-governmental organisations assisting migrants with information.

He recalled that in the early hours of Wednesday morning at Röszke, in smaller groups, around forty migrants attempted climb over the border fence and enter Hungary. Regarding this, Mr Bakondi said migrants threw objects at the cameras installed at the border and later at the police officers arriving at the site, while they also damaged several police vehicles. Some of them managed to climb over the fence, but they were apprehended, he added. This is not the first time something like this has happened, he continued, indicating that the asylum regulations require migrants to cooperate with the given country’s authorities. In this instance, “there was not even a trace” of cooperation.

Mr Bakondi said it is hard to imagine that migrants themselves conceive and organise these attempts, highlighting that in his view the present situation is similar to that of the digging of tunnels. “It is therefore evident that there is organised assistance, including selecting the right penetration points,” he stressed, adding that someone must supply tools and people must be organised.

On Kossuth Radio’s programme ‘Good morning, Hungary,’ the Chief Security Advisor also said that with attempts like these migrants are testing the authorities’ reaction time and firmness of action. They hope that while larger groups distract the police, others can cross the border, he added.
