In the past few days, the number of migrants attempting to cross the Hungarian border has increased significantly, the Chief Security Advisor to the Prime Minister said on the public service television news channel M1 on Wednesday evening.

György Bakondi recalled that before the restrictive measures introduced due to the epidemic, a major conflict had developed at the Turkish-Greek border involving thousands of migrants.

There is no change in Turkey’s migration policy, and so after the abatement of the epidemic – with the opening of the Turkish borders – the Turkish will continue to put pressure on the European Union, he added.

According to the chief security advisor’s information, there are some 130,000 migrants in transit on the Balkans route at present; they “got stuck” in the countries of the region earlier, in consequence of the closure of the borders due to the epidemic. While at the Turkish-Greek green border the measures implemented in response to the epidemic restricted the flow of new arrivals, migrants kept arriving at the Greek islands continuously.

Mr Bakondi said due to the lifting of measures, ever more migrants are attempting to enter the EU.
