“Over 700 migrants were apprehended on the Hungarian Serbian border in January, most of them hidden in vehicles”, the Chief Security Advisor to the Prime Minister said on Hungarian M1 television’s Tuesday morning current affairs program.
György Bakondi said the double fence reinforced with technical equipment, the closing of existing loopholes, the reviewing of the background of NGOs that facilitate migration, increasing the number of police officers, and the level of information available to the Hungarian authorities are providing the opportunity to stop even larger numbers of illegal migrants this year.
“Thanks to our efforts, no outstanding public security event occurred last year in Hungary”, he highlighted.
“Hungary regards border protection as a sovereign decision, according to which only Hungary can decide who can cross its border”, he stressed.
“Because strict border protection is the basic requirement for the stability of the domestic security situation”, he added.
“There are currently over seventy thousand immigrants on the Balkan migration route; most of those arriving are prom Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran and Algeria”, Mr. Bakondi stated.
