The National Police Headquarters has stated that in Hungary between Friday and Sunday around 500 people were apprehended who had illegally crossed the border.
According to the statistics published on the police website, on Friday, Saturday and Sunday the numbers apprehended were 167, 213 and 77 respectively.
During the first weeks of the year, the number of migrants crossing Hungary’s borders illegally averaged around ten a day; in February, March and April, however, there were a number of days on which over 200 people were apprehended. The trend peaked on Easter Monday, with 255 cases. Between last Monday and Sunday, police apprehended 876 people for illegal border crossing; one week earlier – 9–15 May – the number of cases amounted to 666.
According to information on criminal offences related to migration from the Prosecutor’s Office and the Judiciary, the citizenship of migrants is very diverse: there are many claiming to be Afghan, Syrian or Pakistani citizens, or nationals of North African countries, but migrants are also arriving from more distant places, such as Haiti or Sri Lanka.
