On Sunday György Bakondi, Chief Security Advisor to the Prime Minister, told Hungarian public television channel M1 that the Romanian authorities are strictly protecting the border with Hungary. Nevertheless Hungary will, if necessary, consider establishing a physical border barrier system in consultation with its Romanian partners.
Mr. Bakondi said that as the legislative border closure entered into force last Tuesday, migration pressure has increased on the Romanian-Serbian and the Croatian-Serbian borders over the past couple of days. The Romanians are strictly controlling the border and are lawfully cooperating with the Hungarian authorities; therefore at the moment there is no need for any changes related to border management.
He added that if there are difficulties similar to the migration pressure of 2015, Hungary will jointly consider with its Romanian partners whether it is necessary to set up a physical border barrier system – and, if so, where it should be established.
