President of the Republic János Áder appointed János Süli as the Minister without Portfolio responsible for the planning, construction and putting into commission of the two new blocks of the Paks Nuclear Power Plant in Wednesday in Budapest.
Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announced in Parliament on 10 April that he would be appointing a Minister without Portfolio to supervise and manage the Paks Nuclear Power Plant project, and on Tuesday Mayor of Paks János Süli (People’s Party) confirmed press reports that he had been asked to fill the post of Minister in a statement to Hungarian news agency MTI.
In accordance with the Hungarian-Russian inter-governmental treaty, the Minister without Portfolio will be responsible for the professional management and coordination of the implementation of the agreements on the planning, procurement and constriction of the two new blocks, on support for operations and maintenance, and on the provision of nuclear fuel.

He will also be responsible for the inter-ministerial coordination of tasks relating to the realisation agreements and with the related licencing and other official tasks, in addition to coordinating the performance of official authority tasks.
The new Minister will also be responsible for coordinating the regional development relating to the two new blocks as Paks and for coordinating nuclear energy industry innovation tasks.

In accordance with the amendment, Minister heading the Prime Minister’s Office János Lázár will represent the Government at talks with the European Union relating to the expansion of the Paks power plant, with the involvement of the Minister without Portfolio.
Parliament’s Economic and Sustainable Development Committee also backed the appointment of János Süli.
