According to the Chief Security Advisor to the Prime Minister, the pressure of migration has been ongoing ever since 2015, and while there were times when the sea route was more dominant than the Balkans route and migrants arriving from Libya sometimes outnumbered those coming from Turkey, migration “has not stopped for a second”.

On Thursday on the public service television news channel M1 György Bakondi said the current migration situation in the Balkans region indicates that the number of migrants has multiplied in countries which were not previously affected by migration. He said that, instead of the previous main route, a new route has come into being. Migrants arriving on the continent attempt to move partly from Serbia towards Bosnia and Herzegovina and partly from Albania towards Montenegro, Bosnia and then Croatia and Slovenia, and from there on to Austria or Italy. The migration situation in the countries mentioned – and he made specific mention of Bosnia and Herzegovina – gives rise to major concern.

Mr Bakondi stressed that if the countries lying on the migration route did not protect their borders – the external borders of the European Union – stringently, migrants would immediately start arriving in larger numbers. The number of Syrians has decreased, while the number of Afghans, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis, Turks and Iranians has increased primarily, he added.
