The returning fighters of the terrorist organisation which calls itself Islamic State pose yet another major threat to Europe, the Chief Security Advisor to the Prime Minister said on the Friday evening programme of the public service television news channel M1.

György Bakondi highlighted that already from 2015 we have observed terrorist organisations sending people to Europe – also as part of the mass influx of illegal migrants – in order to commit attacks here. About many we still do not know when they may receive orders to carry out attacks, he added.

The chief security advisor said in the context of the returning fighters of the terrorist organisation that these are trained soldiers who have already taken part in combat and attacks on the civilian population. Their potential return to Europe is yet another security challenge for the continent, a challenge that is difficult to prepare for in terms of numbers, technology and legal regulations. Hungary is doing everything it can to rise to this challenge, the advisor pointed out.

Mr Bakondi repeated on the programme of M1 that from a security point of view 2018 will be a decisive year. He highlighted that the plan is to have the new Dublin regime approved in the European Council in March and at the meeting of the Home Affairs Council by June. The quotas without an upper limit also form part of this regime, as do a number of other elements which “are clearly disadvantageous for the nation states”.

He drew attention to the fact that this year will be the last full year of the current bureaucracy before the European Parliament election in 2019. Mr Bakondi believes that also for this reason it is very important for the current leaders to push through the decisions which will determine their migration policy.
