According to the Prime Minister’s Chief Security Advisor, based on the statements of recent days there are major endeavours at both European parliament (EP) and European Commission (EC) level to set down at a legislative level an unlimited quota for accepting refugees that would be mandatory for member states.

Speaking on Hungarian M1 television’s Wednesday evening current affairs program, György Bakondi recalled that in 2015 the sudden appearance of mass illegal migration caught the European Union by surprise. Measures aimed at truly stopping the wave of migration were introduced at member state level. In fact, “it was the nation states who took action”, and their measures were in general successful.

According to the Chief Security Advisor, both the EP and the Commission are “misinterpreting their roles”, in view of the fact that according to the basic treaty of the European Union the most important role is played by nation states and their leaders.

Mr. Bakondi also mentioned that the two-day meeting of EU heads of state and government will begin on Thursday in Brussels.

“This will be the first meeting at which the new Czech and Polish prime ministers will be making speeches”, he noted, adding that both heads of government had previously made statements with regard to, amongst others, the reinstatement of external border controls, the need to stop mass, uncontrolled illegal migration, and the “pointlessness” of introducing mandatory, unlimited quotas.
