According to György Bakondi, Chief Security Advisor to the Prime Minister, the EU has started to introduce misguided and impractical measures, by launching comprehensive checks of every EU citizen at the Schengen borders.
On Saturday Mr. Bakondi told Hungarian television channel M1 that up until now it has been enough to show passports at the Schengen borders. In the future, however, everyone who crosses the border must also be checked against databases.
As a result, significant congestion in both directions can be expected during peak periods on Hungary’s borders with Ukraine, Romania, Serbia and Croatia. Mr. Bakondi indicated, however, that in the regulation there is the vague suggestion that it could be temporarily suspended.
He continued by saying that the measure has not been thought through carefully, and it cannot even achieve its main aim of excluding terrorists.
