“Coordinated action and the protection of external EU borders is necessary, and the system of standards of the Schengen Agreement must be reinstated”, the Chief Security Advisor to the Prime Minister said on Hungarian M1 television’s Saturday evening current affairs program.
According to György Bakondi: During the past two and a half years the European Union has to a major degree and with regard to important issues failed to introduce the measures that it should have implemented in the interests of protecting the Schengen Area, it has “attacked” those countries that have attempted to strictly uphold the implementation of the treaty, and given space to efforts aimed at reintroducing internal border controls.
The Chief Security Advisor also stressed the distribution of people who have entered Europe illegally and without any kind of control among the member states of the European Union is not a step towards a solution.
“As a result of the European Union’s irresolute decisions and indecisive and often mistaken action, nation states began to defend themselves, party by introducing internal border controls and partly through reinforcing their secret service and law enforcement staff and amending regulations”, Mr. Bakondi explained, adding that these steps were all aimed at reinforcing domestic security in view of the host of serious crimes and fatal terrorist attacks that have occurred in Europe.
