György Bakondi, Chief Security Advisor to the Prime Minister told M1 Hungarian television’s Thursday morning current affairs program that the situation on the Greek islands is chaotic and mass migration is becoming difficult to manage in mora and more countries along the main migration routes.
Mr. Bakondi explained: “Masses of migrants are continuously flowing along the two main migration routes – from Libya and Egypt toward the Italian coast, and along the Balkan route – and the situation is also becoming increasingly difficult in Greece and on the Greek islands. In addition, several negative circumstances have arisen between Turkey and the European Union, which necessitate the modification of the previously planned schedule”.
According to Mr. Bakondi, we must prepare for the possibility that a wave of migration greater than the current one or even that experienced last year could soon reach the borders of Europe. “Everything possible must be done to protect Europe’s borders. The illegal or unauthorised mass entry of people into Europe must be prevented. Only those must be allowed entry who require temporary protection, in addition to which their countries of origin must be given economic assistance”, he said, listing important measures.
The Chief Security Advisor highlighted the fact that the issue of security and limiting illegal immigration had also been in the forefront of newly elected U.S. President Donald Trump’s campaign. “In addition, he also made several statements concerning the improvement of American-Russian relations”, he pointed out, adding that “It would be useful to end the cold war period and return to economic security and political cooperation”.
“Russian President Vladimir Putin has also stated that Russia is ready for such cooperation”, Mr. Bakondi added, noting that “This would also be a very significant step forward with regard to global security and finding solutions to difficult problems in the world’s various crisis zones”.
