At a meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on Defence and Law Enforcement on Tuesday, designate Minister of Defence István Simicskó urged closer cooperation with the Ministry of Interior and the Counter-Terrorism Centre, in order to identify terrorists.

Many illegal migrants do not want to register or cooperate with the authorities, and this poses a serious security threat to Hungary and to Europe, he said. He added that it is hard to establish the identity of people arriving, and their motives for coming. It is enough for a few dozen people “driven by some insane idea” to want to commit an act of terrorism, he said.

He also emphasised the importance of Hungary’s participation in the joint work of NATO member states, and that the country must learn from its allies.

The Committee approved Mr. Simicskó’s appointment, with four votes in favour and one against.
