The government aims at protecting smaller media companies – Minister of the Prime Minister’s Office János Lázár stated at the Tuesday meeting of the National Assembly’s Committee on Economics.
The concrete proposal on the modification of the advertisement tax has not yet been laid out, but at the meeting, Minister Lázár pointed out that the government may submit the proposal in March. He also reminded his audience that two EU directorate generals – DG Taxation and Customs Union and DG Competition – have launched procedures against Hungary due to the advertising tax, which is why the modification has become necessary.
However, the Minister also pointed out that the European Commission accepted the existence of the advertising tax, their concerns were mostly of methodological and technical nature.
The head of the larger government party also stated at the meeting that the rate of the advertisement tax may be around 3-5 per cent.
