Government Spokesperson Zoltán Kovács is at the Hungarian-Austrian border to gain first-hand information on the status and fate of illegal immigrants leaving Hungary.

At a press conference held in the early hours of Saturday morning at the major border crossing station of Hegyeshalom, the Spokesperson told the press he was in continuous negotiations with the Austrian authorities on what would be happening to them.

„The opportunity has come for Austria to show its solidarity”, Mr. Kovács stressed. „A joint European solution must be found to handle illegal migration”, he continued, adding that in his view the next few days may see progress on the issue.

“In Hungary, the situation in the capital has become unsupportable in recent days. Migrants were less and less willing to cooperate and had begun to turn violent. The decision was made to transport migrants away from the capital by bus, to alleviate the security risk. The goal of the operation was to clear the M1 motorway and enable international rail transport to resume”, the Spokesperson explained. “We are now helping around three thousand people to cross the border into Austria, in cooperation with the Hungarian and Austrian authorities”, Mr. Kovács said.

“We still don’t know what will happen to them, however. Some want to travel on to Germany, while others wish to remain in Austria, and it is unclear what will happen if they do not receive refugee status”, the Government Spokesperson said.
