In Hungary, no Holocaust memorial site can be established without the support of the Hungarian Jewry, “there will either be a museum with them or no museum at all” – Minister of the Prime Minister’s Office János Lázár said in an interview on Tuesday.
The debate on the House of Fates is not about the difference of opinions between two people, it is about a very important issue – Minister Lázár replied to the assumption of journalists that according to the Chief Director of the Public Foundation for the Research of Central and East European History and Society Mária Schmidt the Prime Minister’s Office was purposely hindering the establishment of the memorial site.
“There is only one aspect that I cannot and will not disregard under any circumstances: In Hungary a Holocaust museum or a Holocaust memorial site cannot be built without the representatives of the Hungarian Jewry or without their support” – Mr Lázár stressed.
The Minister emphasised that there is either going to be a museum and memorial site with them, or not at all.
“Organizers, designers, historians and the government as well must gain the support of the Hungarian Jewry in order to create the museum and to establish the memorial site. If the Hungarian Jewry, the Holocaust survivors do not support it, the House of Fates will not be built” – the politician said.
