On Thursday, Minister of the Prime Minister’s Office János Lázár asked Hungary’s national Assembly to support the Government and provide a mandate for the protection of the country’s southern border.
In his pre-agenda speech, Mr. Lázár said this would mean several things: physical protection, which will be realised with the aid of the border security fence, and protection through police manpower, which would be implemented through the deployment and reinforcement of the police force.
He also asked that Members of Parliament provide assistance towards the development of legal protection through the amendment of legislation and the tightening of the Criminal Code. If the fence is not constructed and if there isn’t sufficiently strong legal protection, refugees will be able to enter the country anywhere along the border and will be able to set up camp, congregate and come forward with demands anywhere within the country’s territory, Mr. Lázár pointed out.
The Minister also highlighted the fact that while 73 thousand illegal immigrants had crossed the border prior to 6 June, the total number of illegal entrants this year had risen to some 160 thousand by 3 September.
