Two tunnels dug for the purposes of crossing under the Serbian-Hungarian border have been blocked.

At his press conference held in Budapest on Thursday, Gergely Gulyás, the Minister heading the Prime Minister’s Office said one of the tunnels was 34 metres in length dug to the depth of six metres near the settlement of Ásotthalom in Csongrád County, while the other one was 21.7 metres in length near the settlement of Csikéria in Bács-Kiskun County.

According to the police’s communication, patrolling officers serving at the Southern border section discovered the tunnels soon after their completion. Both tunnels dug manually without any internal support structures were hazardous.

At the Ásotthalom tunnel the police detained 44 illegal immigrants, while at the Csikéria tunnel no one could get through, the Communication Service of the National Police Command Centre stated on Friday.

In both instances, the diggers of the tunnels paid a great deal of attention to disguising the projects under way; they covered the entrances and exits with vegetation. The police filled up the tunnels, the communication reads.
