Deputy Prime Minister Zsolt Semjén held talks regarding the issues of the migrant crisis and the development of Hungarian-Jordanian relations during his visit to Jordan, Bertalan Havasi, the Deputy State Secretary heading the Press Office of the Prime Minister told kormany.hu.

The Deputy Prime Minister also attended the commemoration held at the Hungarian Embassy in Amman on the occasion of the 15 March national holiday.

According to the information released by the Press Office of the Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister Zsolt Semjén, who is on a visit to Jordan, met with the leaders of the Jordanian Parliament on Tuesday in Amman. He exchanged views on the development of bilateral relations and international issues with Atef Tarawneh, Speaker of Jordan’s House of Representatives and Faisal al-Fayez, President of the Senate. Both parties spoke about the development of Hungarian-Jordanian inter-governmental and inter-parliamentary relations in terms of praise. Mr Semjén handed over the official invitation of László Kövér, Speaker of the Hungarian Parliament to the President of the Jordanian Senate.

In addition to parliamentary leaders, Mr Semjén also met with several members of the Jordanian Government. He stressed Hungary’s interest in the development of cooperation in the fields of atomic energy and water management and the dynamic improvement of our trade and investment relations. He underlined: Hungary deems important the opportunity offered by the Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship programme, as part of which hundreds of Jordanian students may attend higher education in Hungary. After viewing the Hungarian archaeological excavations in Machaerus, Mr Semjén also underlined the importance of the opportunities inherent in cultural and scientific cooperation.

According to the press release, the two countries look upon the fight against extremism and terrorism as a common challenge, and these issues must be considered as particular priorities upon the management of the current migrant and refugee crisis. Both the Hungarian and the Jordanian parties stressed the importance of the settlement of the conflict in Syria by means of negotiations within the shortest possible time as the only way out of the crisis.

Hungary greatly appreciates Jordan’s role in sheltering Syrian refugees, and supports all initiatives within the European Union to provide the assistance Jordan needs in sharing the related burdens, the press release of the Press Office of the Prime Minister reads.
