The Hungarian stance taken against illegal immigration has become a general European approach. However, unless tough action is taken, there will be grave problems, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said on Wednesday in Prague, at the summit of the prime ministers of the Visegrád countries.

In Hungary in 2015 we built the fence and “announced an anti-Muslim-immigration policy” which the entire European public has learnt about since and which “I regard as successful,” the Prime Minister stated.

“At the time, different winds were blowing in Europe, we Hungarians suffered abuse and insults enough for defending our borders,” he said.

He stressed that, according to the Hungarian government’s position, “there are two things we don’t do; we don’t complain and we don’t apologise”.

“We do what we have to do, and believe that our actions will speak for us,” he said, adding that this is also true of migration.

Mr Orbán said he advises everyone to do what Hungary already did in 2015.

He highlighted that even if Greece’s efforts to detain migrants prove to be successful, we must not forget about the 130,000 people who are already North of the Greek border and want to enter the interior of Europe.

As Greece has already let them through, they will have to be stopped somewhere beyond the Greek borders. Therefore, we must not forget about assistance to be provided for Macedonia and Serbia because we will have to attempt to detain these masses as far south as possible, Mr Orbán said.

If all else fails, then – the same as in 2015 – “the Hungarians will be there as a last resort”: We will stop them at the Serbian-Hungarian border, he added.
