After a closed session of the European Union Consultation Body in the Hungarian parliament on Tuesday, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said that it is important for Hungary to be able to defend its own interests – both before and after its upcoming general election. It is in this spirit, he said, that Hungary will attend the upcoming European Union summit in Brussels.
In a video uploaded to his Facebook page, the Prime Minister said that the overriding question which must be focused on at the EU summit is immigration. In his opinion it is obvious – particularly after German chancellor Angela Merkel’s visit to Poland – that within the period of the Bulgarian EU presidency, which runs until the end of June, “they want to force, blast and wrestle through” new European regulations which encourage and support immigration.
He stressed that “we must block this, and we must confront it”, and that in this context the summit is important, with the “deciding showdown” coming in June.
Mr. Orbán also said that the United Kingdom’s sovereignty has come under attack. Hungary, he said, will make it clear in Brussels that in the spirit of solidarity the UK must receive the full support of all. He added that it is unacceptable for the citizens of any European Union or NATO member state to be attacked within their own country, as has recently happened. The Prime Minister said that Hungary stands shoulder to shoulder with the United Kingdom.
