On Tuesday Prime Minister Viktor Orbán welcomed French President Emmanuel Macron’s initiative announced the day before to start talks with respect to the reform of the European Union.

According to Reuters’ report, in a written statement sent to the news agency the Hungarian Prime Minister welcomed Mr Macron’s proposal which could mark, in his words, the beginning of a serious European debate.

“This could mark the beginning of a serious European debate – it is high time we spoke seriously about Europe’s future. In the details, of course, we have differences of views, but far more important than these differing opinions is that this initiative be a good start to a serious and constructive dialogue on the future of Europe,” Mr Orbán said.

Appealing to all the citizens of the European Union, Mr Macron wrote, among others, that it is necessary to establish a European agency for protecting democracies, to implement reforms in the Schengen Area, to prohibit the funding of European parties from abroad, and to set up a common border guarding agency and EU asylum office.
