At an informal meeting of EU foreign ministers in Bratislava, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó held talks with Foreign Minister of Malta George Vella. Among others, they discussed the issue of migration.
According to a statement by the National Police Headquarters, between Friday and Sunday 119 migrants were apprehended at the Hungarian-Serbian border.
“There is a good chance that after last year, external economic indices could achieve new records again this year”, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s Chief Press Officer, Tamás Menczer, told Hungarian public media on Friday.
“The Visegrád Group is the closest and most effective alliance within the European Union today”, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó said.
“If the agreement between Turkey and the European Union isn’t adhered to then an even larger wave of migration than last year could reach Hungary before winter sets in”, the Prime Minister’s Chief Advisor on Homeland Security György Bakondi said on Saturday in Székesfehérvár.
The Hungarian-U.S. social security agreement, signed by Hungarian Minister of Human Capacities Zoltán Balog and U.S. ambassador to Budapest Coleen Bell on 3 February 2015, came into effect on 1 September 2016. The agreement will favourably affect many Hungarian and U.S. citizens.
Csaba Dömötör, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Cabinet Office of the Prime Minister, has said on public television channel M1 that if the Hungarian Socialist Party (MSZP) really wants to support the Government, it should not contest the referendum being held on 2 October.
Referring to the case of the Hungarian woman who was raped by three Eritrean men in Germany, Government Spokesperson Zoltán Kovács told public television channel M1 on Thursday that Europe must find answers to fundamental questions – such as, for example, whether it can protect its borders and citizens. This is what the referendum is about, he added.
On Friday Government Spokesperson Zoltán Kovács told Hungarian television channel M1 that for democrats there is no alternative but to argue for people voting in the quota referendum. Mr. Kovács said this in reaction to opposition party campaign events which encourage people not to vote on 2 October.
