“Hungary is the EU’s most rapidly developing country”, Minister of Finance Mihály Varga declared in an interview for Hungarian daily Magyar Nemzet. In the interview, which was published in Monday’s edition of the paper, Mr. Varga said the government has already begun drawing up the second Economy Protection Action Plan, and a decision on the new measures is expected during the first half of next year.

The Hungarian economy has grown by 5 percent

“The effects of the government measures introduced in the recent period are being felt in practically every sector of the economy, and accordingly the gross domestic product increased by 5 percent, in excess of analyst’s expectations, in the third quarter of 2019”, Minister of Finance Mihály Varga declared in assessment of the latest statistical data. Growth during the first 9 months of the year was 5.1 percent overall.

The Ministry of Finance has submitted new economy protection and competitiveness improvement bills to the National Assembly. The Hungarian economy is expected to perform well above the EU average again this year. In the interests of preserving Hungary’s economic results, the Cabinet decided in May on the first Economy Protection Action Plan, and Parliament has already decided on six of the Plan’s seven points relating to tax cuts, for instance the reduction of social contributions tax and small business tax (KIVA), while the seventh point is part of the bill that has been submitted today.

The state of the budget is developing according to expectations

As a result of the government’s responsible fiscal management, public finances continue to be characterised by calculability and stability. The central subsystem closed the first ten months of this year with a deficit of 575.4 billion forints (EUR 1.73 million), which represents 57.6 percent of the annual target. In addition to real economy processes, this indicates that the 1.8 percent of GDP target deficit, calculated according to EU methodology, will also be achieved.

EU finance ministers held consultations regarding tax exemption of home-made spirits

At the meeting of the European Union’s finance ministers, the tax exemption of home distilling was on the agenda again, Finance Minister Mihály Varga informed the press after the meeting. The Hungarian Minister said the majority of EU Member States support the adoption of a new directive which would lay down that each household would be allowed to make fifty litres of fruit-based spirits annually without the payment of excise duty; however, in the absence of the full agreement of all Member States, no decision has been adopted.

The number of new housing construction projects is increasing further

The measures introduced by the government have also played a key role in the fact that 10,300 new homes have already been constructed during the first three quarters of this year, in addition to which 2.7 percent more construction permits have been issued compared to the same period in the previous year. Based on developments so far, the number of newly constructed homes is expected to continue in 2019 as a whole.

Wages in Hungary have increased by more than ten percent

“Wages and salaries increased by 10.7 percent in the first eight months of 2019, meaning the increase in wages in Hungary has been in double figures for the third year running”, Minister of Finance Mihály Varga said, commenting on the latest earnings figures published this morning. “During the past year, calculated in the national currency, gross wages have increased by the highest level in Hungary from among the countries of the Visegrád Group (V4), which is also greatly assisting the growth of the Hungarian economy via increasing consumption”, the Minister highlighted.

Hungarian Government Security Plus bond also available in printed form from Monday

“Beginning on Monday, Hungary’s most popular form of investment, the Hungarian Government Security Plus (MÁP Plus) bond will also be available in printed form at post offices in six denominations from ten thousand forints to two million forints, providing the highest rate of interest on the market. Hungarian families have already subscribed to the electronic MÁP Plus bond to a value of over 2500 billion forints (EUR 7.6 billion)”, Minister of Finance Mihály Varga wrote on his Facebook page.
