Competitiveness expected to improve in Hungary

As in recent years every major economic indicator has improved in Hungary, it has become possible to lay down the foundations for the economic policy of coming years, Minister for National Economy Mihály Varga said, at the board meeting of Eurochambres, the Association of European Chambers of Commerce and Industry, held in Budapest.

Hungarian economy posted growth even without the support of EU funds

The rate of growth was 2 percent of GDP, above the EU average, in 2016, and thus Hungary has continued to narrow the economic gap with the EU. The country achieved growth without the inflow of EU funding. Thanks to the recently brokered wage deal, Hungary’s economic growth is expected to pick up this year.
European Commission raised Hungary’s GDP growth forecast

In the European Economic Forecast – Winter 2017, the European Commission significantly revised its former growth estimate of 2.6 percent upward, to 3.5 percent of GDO, for Hungary. The Commission predicts the rate of GDP growth to be 3.2 percent in 2018. This modification also signals that the 6-year wage agreement concluded at the end of last year may boost economic expansion.

Government and Knorr-Bremse concluded agreement on developing the SME supplier network

Ministry for National Economy Mihály Varga and the Hungarian companies of breaking-systems producer Knorr-Bremse concluded an MoU to assist the development of Hungarian suppliers in the SME sector. The document was signed by Minister Varga and the representatives of Hungarian subsidiaries.
Hungarian-Iranian economic relations expected to grow even stronger

It is in our mutual interest to further bolster economic relations between Hungary and Iran, Minister for National Economy Mihály Varga said, after receiving Iran's Minister of Economic Affairs and Finance Ali Tayebnia in his office. The main beneficiaries of the two countries’ closer cooperation may be the healthcare and motor vehicle sectors, he stated.
Public finances began the year with a surplus in Hungary

The central sub sector of the state budget closed the month of January 2017 with a surplus of HUF 123.4bn, a favourable first-month figure in light of similar data from recent years. Mihály Varga stressed that the Hungarian Government does everything in its power to assist partnerships between the enterprises of the two countries through cross-border programmes.
Unemployment rate at a new record low in Hungary

In Q4 2016, the number of people in employment rose by 152 thousand year-on-year, Minister for National Economy Mihály Varga said at a press conference. The Minister noted that a breakthrough has been achieved as parallel to job growth the number of people working abroad or as a public work employee has been declining. Since the regime change in 2010, the number of people in employment has increased by more than 700 thousand, with the bulk of job growth, 486 thousand, recorded within the private sector, he noted.
