National Competitiveness Council debates job market issues

“Thanks to the strengthening of the economy and increasing workforce demand on the part of the private sector, the most important challenge to competiveness today has become assuring a suitably trained workforce”, Minister of National Economy Mihály Varga said following the second session of the National Competitiveness Council. New measures to promote the employment of women, young people and pensioners could lead to hundreds of thousands of people returning to the job market, the Minister told reporters.

First quarter balance includes no surprises

At the end of March the cumulative deficit of the central subsystem of public finances was 198.1 billion forints, which is in line with the expectations of the Ministry for National Economy. The processes of the first quarter indicate that public finances continue to be stable, which should also remain the case with regard to the whole financial year.

New bill to close legal loopholes enabling aggressive tax planning and avoidance by multinational enterprises

Hungary’s National Assembly debates today a bill designed to close legal loopholes facilitating the avoidance of paying taxes by multinational enterprises. It is estimated that these schemes reduce fiscal revenues by EUR 50-70 each year at EU member states. Through the adoption of the bill, the National Assembly can prevent massive revenue shortfalls concerning the state budget of not only Hungary but almost 60 countries.

Budapest-Astana flight to be launched

Lower fiscal deficit and general government debt show a stronger Hungary

Dynamic employment growth in the private sector

Favourable labour market trends have continued: in the period December 2016-February 2017, the number of people aged 15-74 years in employment rose by 130 thousand, to 4 million 372 thousand. The bulk of growth was registered in the private sector, where the corresponding growth figure was 144 thousand. The number of public work employees, on the other hand, was down by 14 thousand year-on-year, and that of people working abroad has also fallen, which fact signals a stronger primary labour market.
