Negotiations in Brussels on the CAP reform enter the home straight

The goal of the current President of the Council, Germany, is for member states to adopt the Council’s position on the regulations of the new Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) in October. In preparation for the agreement, EU agriculture ministers discussed the most important remaining issues at a session of the Agriculture and Fisheries Council in Brussels on 21 September.

“The From Farm to Fork and Biodiversity strategies put forward by the European Commission pose an impossible task for farmers, and not only do the contents of these strategies fail to create an opportunity for farmers, but they are explicitly endangering the future of European agriculture. According to preliminary assessments, the proposed measures would lead to a 15 percent decrease in European agricultural production”, Minister of Agriculture István Nagy said in a statement to Hungarian news agency MTI.

Minister of Agriculture István Nagy sent a letter to the European Commission in an appeal to minimise the negative impacts of the Covid-19 epidemic on the poultry sector and to find a solution to the current situation which has arisen therefrom. The Minister asked European Commissioner for Trade Phil Hogan to conduct an urgent review regarding the conditions that are attached to products imported from third countries.

The country’s food supply is guaranteed, the Ministry of Agriculture is in ongoing communication with actors of the food supply chain, Róbert Zsigó, Minister of State for the Supervision of the Food Supply Chain of the Ministry of Agriculture said at the Tuesday online press conference of the Operational Group responsible for the containment of the coronavirus epidemic.

EU leaders discuss assistance for agriculture and fisheries sectors

The extraordinary situation being caused by the coronavirus pandemic requires extraordinary working methods and extraordinary measures. Accordingly, on 25 March the ministers responsible for agriculture and fisheries of the European Union’s 27 member states held a meeting via video conference for the first time since the founding of the EU to discuss the handling of the negative effects being cause by the pandemic.
The Eastern European and Baltic countries are standing up in support of the preservation of existing CAP funding

Following a meeting in Warsaw on Monday, the agriculture ministers of the Eastern European and Baltic countries issued a joint statement declaring that maintaining the current level of funding available for the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) is vital to enabling the fulfilment of the European Union’s climate protection commitments. The Hungarian government will be doing everything possible to protect the agricultural funding due to Hungarian farmers. It is unacceptable that farmers, or the Hungarian people via food price increases, be made to pay the price of climate protection.
