Volume of retail sales up by 4.7 percent in August 2015

According to preliminary data from the month of August 2015, the volume of retail sales rose by 4.7 percent in Hungary, year-on-year. Calendar-effect adjusted data show that the sales volume increased by 3.7 percent at food- and non-specified food retailers, by 4.6 percent at non-food retailers and by 7.4 percent at filling stations, compared to the same period of the previous year. In the period January-August 2015, the volume of retail sales was 6.1 percent higher year-on-year.

Foreign trade sector posts surplus of some EUR 5bn in the initial seven months of 2015

In July 2015, the volume of exports and imports was up by 6 percent and 3.4 percent, respectively, year-on-year. Thus, foreign trade surplus rose to EUR 646 million in the month of July 2015, while the surplus accumulated in the period January-July 2015 reached EUR 4.9bn. In addition to the motor vehicle manufacturing sector, the pharmaceuticals sector also contributed to growth.

Fallout from VW emissions scandal is limitable

In case demand on external car markets falls, it would adversely affect Hungary’s industrial output and exports. Therefore, the Government has been closely monitoring the VW scandal, Minister for National Economy Mihály Varga said at a conference organized by the European Institute in the building of Hungary’s parliament. The fact that the composition of Hungarian exports is becoming more and more diversified is highly favourable, as it reduces the economy’s vulnerability.

Employment at a new high in Hungary

According to the latest report by the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (KSH), the number of people in employment has been above the 4 million mark for more than 18 months in Hungary. In the period June-August 2015, the number of people aged 15-74 years in employment rose by 134 thousand, to 4 million 251 thousand, compared to the same period of the previous year. It has been the highest figure recorded since the regime change in 1990. Unemployment also continued to improve: the current rate of 6.7 percent is the best result in ten years.

Hungarian Government studying fallout from diesel engine scandal

As Minister for National Economy Mihály Varga said, the Government began consultations concerning the diesel scandal already last week. There is, for the time being, no visible fallout from the issue, but declining car sales in Europe would “affect 0.3-0.6 percent of Hungary’s economic performance,” the Minister added.

EU funding helped refurbish the historic city centre of Eger

The refurbishment of the Dobó Square in Eger, completed through EU funding of some HUF 4bn, is a good example of the Government’s productive efforts and a major milestone in the everyday life and history of the city, the seat of the archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Eger, Minister of State for the Utilization of EU Funding Balázs Rákossy said at the opening ceremony of the renewed city centre.

Hungarian tourism sector set to hit new highs in 2015

The tourism sector may this year reach record high figures, as the number of guests at accommodation establishments is expected to hit 10 million, the number of tourism nights and the amount of tourism revenues are to exceed 25 million and HUF 35bn, respectively, by the end of the year, Deputy State Secretary for Tourism Ádám Ruszinkó said at a press conference organized to mark World Tourism Day.
