„No further buses will be transporting migrants from the Keleti Station to the Austrian border”, Government Spokesperson Zoltán Kovács told Hungarian news agency MTI at the border crossing station of Hegyeshalom on the Austrian border early Saturday morning. „No such plan exists”, he said.
The central operational corps decided to direct buses to the Keleti Railway Station and the M1 motorway during the course of the night, and to offer the migrants staying there transport to the Hegyeshalom border crossing station, János Lázár, the Minister heading the Prime Minister’s Office announced at his extraordinary press conference held on Friday evening in the Parliament Building, after the operational corps had a meeting upon the instruction of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán with regard to the migration situation. The central operational corps will continue to remain in session throughout the night.
The Schengen Agreement does not answer the problem of migration, and therefore the rules of border surveillance must be made more stringent, Government Spokesperson Zoltán Kovács said on the public service television news channel M1 on Friday.
The head of the Prime Minister’s Office takes the view that if the Hungarian Government were to give up on compliance with the obligations under the Schengen Agreement, this would automatically result in Hungary finding itself outside the Schengen borders. János Lázár also said at his press conference held on Thursday in Budapest that the Government is seeking the assistance of German diplomats in Hungary.

The Hungarian government is launching an information campaign combating illegal immigration. During the Government’s short but focused campaign (which will use the services of international advertising agency J. Walter Thompson), announcements in given local languages will be placed in leading newspapers in countries of origin and transit countries most associated with illegal migration. The information campaign will also feature billboards, flyers and a multilingual online platform.
